Who goes to the Dentist with toothpaste in their hair?
1 04 2008Me. That’s who…
This morning I went to the Dentist to check on the tooth… with a gob of toothpaste. in. my. hair. How did it get there? I have no idea. I picked most of it out in the waiting room, where I realized I had a gob of toothpaste in my hair. Is the dentist going to smell it? No… I’m in a Dental Office. Why is the dental assistant looking at my head? She can see it! No… false alarm… she was looking past my head… But I have good news. No chipped tooth. My back molar is actually a wisdom tooth that filled in an empty molar spot so it’s slightly angled. Basically I crunched down on the killer crunchies and bruised a ligament that surrounds the tooth. Yay! I would like to publicly apologize for thinking the dentist was crown happy… he clearly is not as he had the perfect opportunity since I was convinced it was chipped. Oh and… someone else would have paid for it. Anyone need a new dentist? I get a free whitening with referral!
Today I’d like to talk about impressions. Last night I helped M throw a surprise party for E’s birthday. This boy has complained to M how none of his friends ever throw him a party… blah, blah, blah. He’s a whiner. The type of person you love/hate. But a nice guy… so I got him a nice cake and some candles and the whole team came over to a bowling ally to surprise him. It was great. He was so stoked and so excited. It really melted my heart. Later on after bowling (I bowled my best game ever… a 99) he was saying to M (who’s from LA and was once mistaken to be Ashton Kutcher when he was first blowing up…)
“Man I bet you’ve had all kinds of crazy parties! People thinking you were famous and stuff in LA!” M says um no… I’ve never even had a party this big. But E insists that he’s bluffing. Now, M has a tendency to name drop… danced with Sharon Osbourne (a friend of his produced her show), ran into Drew Carrey at a club, chatted with him about both of their equally dumb blond dates…. etc. So E is convinced that M has had this rock star life. He wants to be like M.
Something I’ve learned over time is nothing lives up to expectations… especially when they come from someone else’s impression. OMG, so and so is an amazing designer. Then I meet them… um, no, they’re just okay. Or people who bow down to the big boss because a) they’re the boss and b) they are just so this or that. But in reality, they are just people too. Nothing special. Granted, I have met some special folks, and it’s possible others might not agree with what I think of them… but I’ve come to a point where I’m unaffected by the hype up some one else gives me. Is it just me? Because again, I’m not easily impressed. I don’t get star struck and I don’t care about the Joneses… but I feel a little sad for people like E who are trying to live up to some impression of another, blindsided by this image that isn’t even real. Maybe it’s good… it motivates him to become something. But really, no one’s perfect and there’s always some one or something better.
In other news the interview went well. Unfortunately it wouldn’t be “open time” to draw and do my own thing, but I’m really interested in the job. It’s at an accounting and bookkeeping school. It sounds like I’d be dealing with a lot of lower income people who are really trying to change their lives and get a decent career… I would love to help people. A woman told me that a lot of times people call just because they need someone to talk to. They’re scared… they’re lonely… I would love that. 2 days would be full days, like 9 - 6, but I can choose how the other hours are set up. So I’m hoping it comes through… send me your good luck vibes!!!
PS: I know I’m a little behind on the side blog… I just need to bust out the scanner…
